During the procedure, a distraction appliance is placed that will slowly separate two bony segments, allowing the gap to be filled in with new bone. The newly formed bone can serve as a solid foundation for dental implants.
Distraction Osteogenesis is typically done on an outpatient basis, with appropriate sedation so that the patient is comfortable. There is no need for facial surgical incisions, and the procedure is done inside the patient’s mouth. Activation of the distraction device to create the separation can cause mild discomfort, similar to having braces tightened.
