Zygomatic dental implants provide an alternative for those patients who are told they are not candidates for dental implant surgery due to lack of bone. With zygomatic dental implants, there is new hope for treatment.
Typically, patients who have had bone loss do not have the necessary height and/or width to support dental implants. Patients can be missing bone due to various reasons, including:
- long-term tooth loss
- trauma
- cancer
- tumors in the region of the jaw
Patients who fall into this category have in the past required bone graft surgery to attempt to regenerate or rebuild enough bone mass to sufficiently support dental implants.
With the introduction of Zygomatic dental implants, there is no need for bone grafting. It is a graftless technique where the implants are directly embedded in the cheekbones, or the Zygoma. Here there is enough bone support for the implants. The procedure utilizes a specially extended dental implant that can be inserted into the cheekbone instead of the jawbone.
Additionally, this procedure is non-invasive, meaning that it does not require surgery. Using a 3D DT scanner, the patient’s mouth is precisely mapped so that implant placement is computer guided. A general anesthetic is used to put the patient into a “twilight sleep”. The zygomatic implants are anchored in place in the zygomatic bone, and a provisional prosthesis can be immediately fixed until complete restoration is achieved. A full set of immediate teeth can be connected to the implants after 1-3 days.
